Se7en (1995)

Another Saturday, another afternoon at the softball field and unfortunately, another loss as the bats never got going. Sure, the daughter walked twice and made a nice play in the field, but being shut-out in the next to last game of the season sucks. There is always tomorrow and the fall ball finale, which they should win. When I got back, I decided to watch something older, the classic thriller Seven from 1995.

Plot/ Two homicide detectives' desperate hunt for a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world's ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins. Throughout this chase from one victim to the next, serial killer / sociopath John Doe sermonizes to Detectives Sommerset and Mills one sin at a time.

Some movies are meant to stand the test of time and this is one of those films. Se7en, has such great atmosphere and tension within the dark depths of its storyline, that it still sends some chills. What is even more impressive is the way it effortlessly blurs the genre lines from mystery to thriller to horror to drama and creates something that resonates to fans of any of those. The acting is solid, the scripting tight, the cinematography amazing, effect spot on and the atmosphere tremendous. Honestly, other than a few clichéd moments, this was a great film. In the end, if you have not seen Seven yet, I do not know what you are waiting for, this dark journey into darkness may be one of the most chilling psychological thrillers made and is clearly one of the best movies to come from the 1990s. This is a must see.
